Velton Oglesby

Velton Leroy Oglesby, 84, of Augusta, KS, passed away Thursday, August 28, 2025 in Wichita. Visitation 10:00 am until his celebration of life at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 3, 2025 at Headley Funeral Chapel, Augusta. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery Augusta, Kansas.

Velton was born on the family farm in Black Fork, Arkansas on January 7, 1941, to the late Edna Marie (Watts) and Travis Loid Oglesby. At the age of 2 the family left Arkansas and Velton grew up traveling the country while his father built tanks in refineries. In total he attended twenty-two elementary schools and eight high schools. He attended El Dorado Community College where he met Mary Jane Fitzwater. On March 3, 1962 they were married in St. James Catholic Church, Augusta; she survives him. He was proud of their 63-year marriage and his 63 years as an Augusta resident.

Velton worked at a variety of jobs and developed many skills throughout his life. He retired from Reeves-Weideman in 2006.

Velton enjoyed fishing, camping, reading, & woodworking. He was especially proud of the cradles he made for his daughter's children. In retirement he enjoyed traveling, especially a trip to Alaska. He loved his family and was very proud of the accomplishments of his daughters and grandchildren.

He is also survived by: daughters, Lisa Daniels of Augusta; Toni Porter and husband Paul of Wichita; sister, Linda Christoff and husband Alex "Buzz" of Beaufort, SC; grandchildren, Adam Daniels (Jaci). Chase Daniels (Kristen), Claire Daniels, and Nicholas Cannady; and great grandchildren, Yeager Daniels, Sebastian, Samantha, and Rand Daniels. He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Peter Christoff.

Memorial donations may be made to Augusta Public Library, 1609 State St., Augusta, KS 67010 to create a collection of fishing equipment to be available to the community in his memory.
