Fred Gilbert Shanklin, 102, of Augusta, KS, passed away Thursday, February 12, 2026 in Augusta, KS. Memorial service 3:00 p.m. Friday, February 27, 2026, at Headley Funeral Chapel, Augusta, KS. Burial will be at a later date at Elmwood Cemetery, Augusta, KS. Fred was born in Baker, Oregon on October 9, 1923, to the late Nellie (Phipps) and Schuyler Shanklin. He served in the U.S. Army as a SSgt in WW II. Fred worked as a phone installer and repairman at Ft. Ord in California. After retirement Fred golfed 18 holes almost every day. He would walk the course until he had to give up the game when he was 81. On Oct. 23, 1965, he married Elizabeth Florence (Main) Shanklin in Monterey, CA. Elizabeth was the love of his life. She preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his son, Thomas Henley, brothers, Harlan, Richard and Jack Shanklin; sisters, Estella McCollough and Irma Sewell; and a great-great grandson, Nathaniel Bowman. Fred is survived by: daughters, Vicki Bowman of Augusta; and Joy Hawn of Ashland, OR; sons, Mike Shanklin of Ashland, OR, Harlan Shanklin of Bakersfield, CA and Andrew Shanklin of Geneva, NY; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Interim HealthCare & Hospice 9920 E Harry St. Wichita, KS 67207.
