Barbara Jean Gulick, age 83, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. A memorial service will be held Monday, July 13, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Headley Funeral Chapel in Augusta, KS, followed by interment at 11:30 a.m. at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Winfield, KS, where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, Jim.
Barbara was born on June 3, 1943, in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, to Jackie (Adams) and Jack Schnoor. She dedicated most of her life to caring for others as a nurse, retiring from LakePoint Nursing Center in 2000. Her nursing career wasn't simply a profession, it was a reflection of who she was. Taking care of others came naturally to Barbara, whether they were patients, family, friends, or even her four-legged companions.
On August 14, 1971, Barbara married James "Jim" David Gulick in Denver, Colorado. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, hard work, and unwavering devotion to one another. After Jim's passing in 2024, Barbara often shared that she could not wait for the day that she would be reunited with him again. Their family finds comfort in knowing they are now reunited after nearly 55 years of marriage.
Known affectionately as Mamo, Barbara's greatest joy was her family. She loved gathering everyone around the table, preparing meals that brought her family together, and making sure no one ever left her home hungry. She believed kindness mattered above all else and often reminded those she loved, "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all." It was advice she lived by every day.
Barbara had an extraordinary love for animals, especially dogs. During the years she and Jim owned J-Bar Kennels, it became somewhat of a running joke that when she nursed sick puppies back to health, they would end up becoming permanent members of her family. Once Barbara loved something, she simply couldn't let it go.
Christmas was Barbara's favorite season, and she transformed it into an experience her family will never forget. Every year she spent days decorating every corner of the house until there was hardly a space untouched by Christmas, each room thoughtfully themed and filled with her cherished collection of Santas. On Christmas Eve, grandchildren eagerly gathered around what always seemed like a mountain of wrapped presents, creating memories that will forever remain some of their most treasured.
At work, many affectionately knew her as "Sarge," a reflection of her confidence, leadership, and high standards. At home, that same determination was softened by her infectious giggle and playful wit. She had a stubborn streak, but somehow it always ended with a laugh, making it impossible not to love her for exactly who she was.
She is survived by her son, Lyle Gulick; her daughters, Roberta Gulick of Holliston, MA, and Lynette Dryden (Eldon) of Augusta, KS; her sister, Sandra Brown (Byron) of Casa Grande, AZ; her beloved grandchildren, Amanda Tunnell (Brett), Jeffrey Wooldridge, Jessica White, Samantha Gulick, Clay Dryden (Emily), Nicole Deiter (Adam), James Buckley Gulick, and Stephan and Demetrius Christi; and her treasured great-grandchildren, Kohen and Kennadi Parsons, Taylor, Katlynn, and Asher Wooldridge, Bobby White, and Theodore and Eli Deiter.
Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James "Jim" Gulick; her parents, Jackie (Adams) and Jack Schnoor; her brother, Dean Schnoor; and her grandson, John Wooldridge.
Barbara will be remembered for her servant's heart, quiet strength, unwavering compassion, playful wit, and infectious giggle. Whether she was caring for a patient, rescuing a puppy, decorating for Christmas, or gathering her family around the table, she made ordinary moments feel extraordinary. Her life was a beautiful example of what it means to care for others, and the love she poured into her family will continue to be felt for generations.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that you consider donating to Lakepoint Nursing Center, honoring Barb's commitment to her nursing career.
