Alan Ray Bowman, 73, passed away Wednesday July 2, 2025 in Winfield, Kansas. He was a lifelong resident of Augusta, Kansas. Alan was born on January 12, 1952 in Colby, Kansas to the late William G. and Hazel F. Bowman (Spraggins).
In 1970, Alan graduated from Augusta High School. After graduation Alan joined the U.S. Army, serving his country in Vietnam from 1971 to 1973, his service ended with an honorable discharge. Upon returning to Augusta, Alan was employed by the City of Augusta Electric Distribution Plant until his retirement in 2017. He married Shirley Ann Hood on April 10, 1986. She preceded him in death on October 31, 2018.
Alan was a very generous person helping out many friends and family members over the years. He saw good in each and every person and made each person he met feel special. His words he spoke everyday were, "May my last act be an act of kindness." His purpose in life was helping those in need. He was a blessing to many.
His passion was playing the violin. He loved music, encouraging everyone he met to learn to play a musical instrument. Alan enjoyed taking his violin with him everywhere, playing it in his own special way. Such was how he lived his life, in his very own special way. He loved to listen to people, always remembering the little things about those he met. Deep and meaningful conversations and thought-provoking conversations were his favorite, yet he loved a good riddle. He truly enjoyed being around his friends and family. His quick wit and sense of humor was not something you would ever forget.
In November of 2023, Alan was involved in a tragic car accident. His rehab was at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield, Kansas. His last 1½ years were spent at that facility under their kind and professional care due to injuries sustained in the accident.
He will be missed by his family: sister, Delores Frantz, Lincoln, Kansas, and brother, Myron Bowman, Arkansas City, Kansas, and his many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews who all loved him very much.
A gathering of family and friends to celebrate his life will be held on September 13 at 1:00 p.m. at the Augusta Historic Depot at 618 State Street in Augusta, Kansas. Please feel free to bring your musical instrument and join in a musical jam session, Alan's favorite. Alan's ashes will be buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Augusta, Kansas.
A memorial has been established in Alan's name to the Kansas Veterans Home, 1220 WW II Memorial Drive, Winfield, Kansas, 67156.
