Donald Humbolt Phillips, 100, Augusta, passed away Monday, January 9th, 2012.  Visitation 4-5 pm Thursday at Headley Funeral Chapel and service 10:30 am Friday, January 13 at 1st Christian Church.  Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery .  Donald was born on a farm outside of Douglass, Kansas on March 26, 1911, the son of the late Calvin and Alma Hendee (Humbolt) Phillips. He graduated high school in 1930.  He attended Butler County Jr. College, where he studied chemistry and zoology.  He attended the First Christian Church (he has been a member for over 80 years) where he met Ruth Thomas singing in the choir.  They married in 1935.  Donald went into the Army/Air Force in October, 1942.  He was able to see his new son Dennis in 1943 just after he was born.  He was sent to England and France where he loaded bombs on the planes.  He was honorable discharged from the Army/Air Force in October, 1945 and returned home to his wife and 3 year old son.  Donald worked at  White Eagle/Scony Mobil/Mobil Refinery until his retirement in 1976 after serving 44 years with the company.  Donald was active in the Camera Club, winning many awards for his photography.  He also belonged to the Garden Club and the Day Lily Club.  After retirement he and Ruth extensively traveled the United  States. They especially loved the Grand Canyon.  Donald did quite a bit of woodworking.  His chests, toys and jewelry boxes are family treasures.  He is survived by  son, Dennis Phillips and wife Melanie of Augusta; brother, Roy Phillips of El Dorado; sister, Effie Swain of Wichita; grandson in law Tim Eldredge; great grandchildren Jay Nelson IV and Sarah Long; and five great-great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by the love of life, Ruth; granddaughter, Denise Eldredge; and sisters Dorothy Boggs, Helen Melton and Arlene Fager.   Memorials to the 1st Christian Church of Augusta.
