George A. Messer, Jr., 84, of Augusta and formerly of Dodge City, passed away Dec. 13, 2011 at the VA Hospital in Wichita. Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011, at the Augusta First Assembly of God Church.  A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 19, at the Fort Dodge Kan. Veterans Cemetery. George was born Sept. 6, 1927 in Lawrence, Kan. to parents George and Phelma Messer. He moved to Fort Dodge, Kan. where he attended his school years.  He served in the United States Navy between 1944-1946. George worked for the State of Kansas as a painter for years. He also was a sign builder which he dearly loved. He served in every capacity of his church. He served on many church boards, was a Sunday School teacher and Royal Ranger leader.  On Sept. 1, 1946 he married Glenna Lee in Dodge City. Surviving family includes: wife,  Glenna; children, Donna and Steve Burkholder of Augusta, and Mark Messer of Wichita; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; brother, LeRoy Messer; sister, Audrey Nilhas. George is preceded in death by his son Kenneth Messer; father and mother; three brothers and four sisters.  Memorials may be given to the National Kidney Foundation.
